Interview with Matsujun
Q. In your first drama in a year and a half, you've become a sleuth who sees lots of action, haven't you?
It's been a long time since I've played a detective at all, and this time the script is original, so I'm really looking forward to it. The premise is that the character I play, Shuntarou, has just joined a detective bureau that houses six other people. But Shuntarou is a modern-type person that considers himself a free spirit, and he's just making his start at being a detective. I hope that viewers will be able to see from his point of view, and feel like, "Oh, detectives do these kinds of things, they're these kinds of people."
Q. What sort of image do you, in particular, get when you hear the word 'detective'?
If we're talking dramas or movies, there's the trenchcoat they wear, and the idea that they know who the culprit is right from the start and go about solving the mystery from there. But in reality, I really don't know. I haven't ever really had the chance to find out what sorts of people detectives are, or what they normally look like, or the work they do. I've heard that in reality they work on investigations that police don't follow up with, and work closely with the affairs of normal people, but… It sounds like they also straightforward self-promotion, like we do in episode one, handing out pocket tissues with fliers tucked inside. So I feel like they must actually close to us in our daily lives. Someone that you wouldn't recognize as a detective just by a glance, like the way Shuntarou becomes a detective. The detectives that appear in this drama are like that, but I think that's one of its interesting features.
Q. What impression do you have of Shuntarou?
He's kind of a pain. Along with saying "I'm a free spirit," and living in a self-centered way, he's also stubborn, and once he decides "I do things this way" he'll refuse to budge. Even once he becomes a detective, once he decides he's right about something he runs with it, and those around him have to back him up. Though you could call that passion, or say that he has his beliefs, so they end up shrugging, like, "That's how he is," and following him anyway. His intuition is often based on luck, but where Shuntarou goes, success seems to happen, so that's part of his appeal. The original six in the bureau kept it going quite well themselves, but the introduction of the rookie brings about a faster pace to things, so I hope that conveys itself to those watching.
Q. What do you think of Eita-san and Oizumi Yo-san, who fill out your detective team?
I've done acting work with Eita-kun briefly before, so it'll be interesting to see how the both of us have changed since then, among other things. Yesterday during our script reading, it was like we kept probing at each other, and that was amusing to me. (smiling) Shuntarou and Arata (Eita) both accept each other, but at the same time they oppose each other, so in one sense, if one of them does something they're at this distance where it easily echoes over to affect the other, which is a constantly new feeling. Oizumi-san is a person who, whether he's acting or in the middle of filming, brings a sense of harmony. I'm thankful for the way he brings brightness to our set. His character Junpei is also interesting, so I hope everyone has high hopes for him.
Q. You're involved in an action scene with Eita-san right from episode one. Please tell us your thoughts on such scenes.
As of right now I only know what sort of action we're doing by way of rumors, but director Satou is the head of the action team this time, and they were the ones that worked on the movie GANTZ. I'm guessing there will be wires, and it will be quite flashy, so I'm looking forward to it. Eita-kun started practicing for the action shots before I did, so when I asked him what he'd done, he told me, "People are jumping on people and choking them." (smiles) I'm not sure the extent of the action we'll be doing, nor the number of scenes, but I'm really looking forward to doing a lot of movement. I'd like to try all kinds of things, even in the studio, like kicking at sandbags with Oizumi-san.
Q. By the by, is there anything you would want to use a detective team to research?
I don't own a dog, (smiles), but don't you ever wonder how they search for lost dogs? I'm interested in how they search for animals that have gone astray. But if I myself were to be a detective, I'd probably want to shadow people. I hear that the professionals are really bold, and get right up close to the people they're tailing. But it sounds like they have techniques they use so that they don't enter their target's consciousness, and thus aren't noticed, so I'd learn to do that…
Q. And, lastly, please leave a message for the fans that are excited about this drama.
「Lucky Seven」is a drama set in a detective agency and with a lot of action, and it's different from the Getsu 9 dramas that have come before, possibly seeming quite showy at first glance. But the cast is exceptional, and for such a cast to perform as detectives doing straightforward investigations is quite new, isn't it? In the beginning Shuntarou is quite the unfortunate detective and not in gear with his fellow six, but as cases are resolved and they work together, little by little they grow together, and I hope that everyone finds that an enjoyable process. Please look forward to it!
